How to select proper styli

There are many types of styli available. Different measuring styli are used for different workpieces. The customers should consider factors such as ball diameter, length, materials, and probing force etc. in use of it.

◆ What is stylus?

It is installed on the probe to contact the measured workpiece. Its typical structure is measuring staff plus ruby ball

◆ What is the key factor for the styli?

· Staff rigidity and hardness, and the roundness and quality of ruby ball

◆ Materials of styli:

· Measuring staff materials: stainless steel, tungsten carbide, ceramics and carbon fiber

· Ball materials: ruby ball, silicon nitride and zircite

· Hardness and error

◆ Different characteristics of measuring styli materials

· Stainless steel:convenience、most economic、durability

· Tungsten carbide:high hardness、applicable to small ball diameter and measuring styli

· Ceramics: light and durable、applicable to long styli up to 150mm

· Carbon fiber:lighter and harder than ceramics、GF lengthened staff

◆ Principle to select the styli

· As short as possible

· The larger the styli bending or deflection is, the larger the error is

· The styli should be as short as possible in any case

· Reduction of connections

· The more the connections, the larger the errors

· Reduction of knuckle numbers

· The larger the ball is, the better it is

· The large ball can avoid influence of the measuring staff

· The large size ball can reduce the influence on the surface of the measured part

In addition, you should consider the allowable probing force and allowable lengthening scope when using the styli and its lengthened staff.
